Hypertension May Be Lowered By Yellow Pea Proteins

A recent study in Canada has discovered that the proteins in the yellow garden pea appear to assist in lowering hypertension. Also, they may delay and control kidney disease, and perhaps even prevent it.

High blood pressure is a major risk for chronic kidney disease, which is thought to affect around 13% of American adults.equates to around 25 million of us.~} Known to be tough for doctors to treat, kidney disease claims many lives as a result of cardiovascular complications and can progress to a level of severity that necessitates life saving kidney dialysis or a kidney transplant.

A team of researchers was searching for a way to affect patients’ blood pressure, and focused their approach on the potential effect of yellow peas, which is a vegetable that is known to be a low fat, cholesterol free source of fiber, vitamins and protein.

What the researchers did was utilize a complex protein purification process to activate a normally dormant benefit from yellow peas. In these research sessions a mix of proteins found in yellow garden peas, called ‘pea protein hydrolysate’ was created and given to rats that had kidney disease.

After eight weeks had passed, the blood pressure of these rats dropped by around 20% compared with the blood pressure of a group of untreated kidney diseased rats.

The researchers thought that was a pretty considerable improvement, and were glad that there were no apparent unfavorable effects from the pea protein. Unfortunately, the making of such a product available to humans isn’t an easy task. It first needs to be combined with enzymes so that it could take the form of a food additive or nutritional supplement.

Human trials are underway at the moment, and if the outcome be successful, the protein may be available in three years time.
