If you have to deal with the pains of eczema, you know all too well the misery that it can cause. Now though, a remedy may have been found in the shape of Chinese healing herbs.

Recent research results, presented at the yearly meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, suggest that orthodox Chinese herbal treatments might be of assistance in treating of eczema sufferers.

In order to address patient worries about whether a non-western approach is beneficial, and is safe, medical researcher Julia Wisniewski, MD, of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York studied 14 young people who had persistent eczema and were treated with traditional Chinese methods between August 2006 and May 2008.

All of them drank Erka Shizheng Herbal Tea twice a day, took a herbal bath for at least 20 minutes, and rubbed herbal cream on their skin throughout the day. Additionally, they had acupuncture treatments.

At the start of the study, over half had severe symptoms; 8 months later, the majority had just mild symptoms. Participants also required a smaller amount of medication (steroids, antibiotics and antihistamines) after only three months of the start of the treatment.

The herbal treatments were found to be safe, and resulted in no abnormal functioning of the liver or kidneys.

When it comes to eczema in adults, a group of Japanese researchers learned that grown ups can also reap the benefits of Chinese medicine. Their work involved 274 adults who had dealt with eczema for around 12 years on average. About a third had symptoms that could be categorized as severe or very severe.

After 12-16 weeks of treatment with herbal remedies that had been chosen and administered based on the subject’s symptoms, around 85% were free from eczema symptoms. Another 10% were said to be much improved.

In all areas, even though more studies are needed, these studies offer encouraging results and indicate that, as an eczema sufferer, you should at least be considering the use of Chinese treatments and healing herbs.
